Introduction to the Department of Gastroenterology

History and Honor

The Department of Gastroenterology of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University was first established in 1950s and became an independent department on 1960s. The department covers the fields of medicine, medical education and medical research. The first Medical Doctor Degree of Hebei province was from here. The department was awarded the “Dual Key Department” by Department of Health and Department of Education of Hebei Province. In 1997, Hebei Institute of Gastroenterology was established which later was approved as the Hebei Key Laboratory in 2000. The department was awarded as Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center by Ministry of Health in 2007, Gastroenterology Endoscopy Specialist Training Center by Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy in 2008. In 2018, the department was awarded as the National Early Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and National Clinical Research Center of Digestive Disease. 

Personals

There are three inpatient units, clinic, endoscopy center, and research laboratory in the unit. More than 120 physicians, nurses and staffs work in the department. Among them, there are 19 professors and associate professors, 2 Ph.D. supervisors, 15 M.S. supervisors. Moreover, 2 physicians are awarded as Experts on Special Allowances of the State Council; 2 physicians are awarded as Provincial Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions; 3 physicians are awarded as Provincial Cross Century Talents; one physician awarded as double ten, double hundred, double thousand talents. These physicians constitute the top tier physicians in the Hebei Province.

Clinical Practice

The department treats varieties of diseases, including liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, gallbladder diseases and GI luminal disease by using endoscopy, vascular intervention (such as TIPS) and artificial liver. More than 100 thousands patients have been treated here.

Endoscopy

There are 11 examination rooms and 2 independent ERCP examination rooms in the endoscopy center. More than 80 gastrointestinal endoscopes, including regular gastrointestinal endoscopes, duodenoscopes, magnification endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), enteroscope and capsule endoscopy, are used.

Varieties of complicated endoscopy procedure are performed by the experienced physicians in the department:

1.      Sclerotherapy and esophageal variceal ligation (EVL) to treat acute variceal bleeding

2.      Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) to treat early gastrointestinal cancer

3.      Endoscopic submucosal excavation (ESE), submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) and Endoscopic full thicknessresection (EFTR) to treat submucosa mass

4.      Stent implantation and balloon dilation to treat GI luminal stricture

5.      Peroralendoscopicmyotomy (POEM) to treat achalasia

6.      Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP)

7.      Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) diagnosis and fine needle aspiration (FNA)

Translational Research

Department of Gastroenterology has strong research facilities. There are molecular biology, cellular biology and pathology platforms. Hebei Provincial Key Laboratory of Gastroenterology and Hebei Provincial Institute of Gastroenterology are also located here. There are PCR machine, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry and many other research facilities. The physicians, researchers and staff are awarded research grant from National Nature Science Foundation of China, Nature Science Foundation of Hebei Province and other government agencies. The research data have been published in the top journals, such Journal of Hepatology, and reported in the prestigious international conference, such Digestive Disease Week.
