Introduction of the Second Hospital of HBMU The origin of the Second Hospital of HeBei Medical University (HBMU) was established as an affiliated clinic to the Zhili Public Medical School in January 1918. It was expanded to a hospital in1920, then moved to Shijiazhuang, HeBei in1958. The branch of east hospital and the north campus hospital were constructed and opened to receive patients in 2013 and 2017. Now, Xishan hospital and Zhengding New District Hospital of the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University are currently under construction. The Second Hospital of HBMU was ranked 63 among the top 100 hospitals in China in the "Competitiveness Report of Chinese Hospitals (2017-2018)" by Institute of Asclepius Hospital Management in Hong Kong. The Second Hospital of HBMU is a comprehensive hospital that integrates medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, health care, rehabilitation, and emergency medicine. The Hospital is a member of Asia Emergency Assistance (AEA) International Service ltd, a national Baby-friendly Hospital, the first batch of National Assured Model Hospitals and a National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, the Ministry of Health Endoscopic Training Base, the Ministry of Health Coronary Heart Disease Intervention Treatment Training Base, the Chinese Medical Association of Laparoscopic Endoscopy Training Base, etc. The hospital also operates working units of 13 provincial medical quality management and control centers including Emergency medicine, Nursing, Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, Medical Records Management, Anesthesiology, Medical imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Human Assisted Reproductive Technology, Ophthalmology, Vascular Surgery, Respiratory. Currently, there are 56medical clinic departments and 7 medical technology departments, and 2816 beds in the Second Hospital of HBMU. In 2018, the total number of outpatients and emergency outpatients were approximately 2,437,000, and the numbers of discharged patients were 169,000, and 74,000 units of various operations that were completed. The hospital has a large assembly of talented medical professionals and strong technical force. Among 5,562 employees, 943 staffs have senior and associate senior professional and technical titles (rehired experts included), including 437 staffs with senior professional and technical title and 506 staffs with associate senior professional and technical title. There is one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one high caliber personnel of Hebei Province, 69 PhD supervisors, 351 master supervisors, provincial management experts, provincial young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, and 77 experts who are awarded special government allowances. The Second Hospital of HBMU is full of specialties and comprehensive strengths. The Cardiovascular medicine, Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Clinical Nursing are eight Departments supported by the National Key Clinical Specialty construction projects. Internal medicine and Neurology are the notable disciplines (group) affiliated with the Education Department of Hebei Province. The three disciplines include internal medicine, surgery, and neurology which are provincial key disciplines affiliated to the Education Department of Hebei Province. On the other hand, there are Twelve disciplines including Neurosurgery, Medical Imaging, General surgery, and Cardiovascular medicine, Neurology, Pediatric Surgery, Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Urology, Cardiac Vascular Surgery, Hematology, and Ophthalmology that are the key medical disciplines supported by the Hebei Provincial Health and Medical Committee. Finally, there are five disciplines including Pathology, Medical Laboratory, Reproductive Health and Infertility, Thoracic Surgery, and Rheumatology and Immunology that are key medical developing disciplines. Most clinical departments in the Hospital are the leading academic units in the province and they undertake more than 100 international, domestic, and provincial academic conferences and communications each year. The hospital has been continuously carrying out technological innovations and introducing advanced technologies. Organ transplantation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, radioactive particle implantation treatment, cardiovascular interventional treatment, neurovascular interventional treatment, in vitro fertilization, embryo transplantation, Coronary artery bypass graft,various professional endoscopic techniques have reached domestic advanced levels. The newly developed TAVI technology and CAR-T technology bring the gospel to patients with complicated diseases. The Second Hospital of HBMU has been making abundant efforts upon medical research. It has dozens of medical research institutes, centers, and laboratories including Hebei Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease Research Institute, Respiratory Disease Research Institute, Digestive Disease Research Institute, and Hematological Research Institute. The clinical Neurology laboratory is a key laboratory that is jointly established by HeBei province and the Ministry. The provincial Key Laboratories are the Hebei Key Laboratory of Vascular Homeostasis, the Hebei Key Laboratory of Hematology, the Hebei Provincial Laboratory of Neurology, and the Hebei Provincial Laboratory of Digestive Diseases. Hebei Provincial Center for Collaborative Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases are the only center within HeBei province medical system based in this hospital. In year 2019, the Second Hospital of HBMU has been granted a total of 9 National Natural Science Foundation projects, including 6 general projects and 3 young science foundation projects. In addition, the hospital has been funded with 230 projects supported by the Provincial Natural Foundation, Department of Science and Technology, Health and Health Commission, Human Resources and Social Affairs Department, and Market Supervision and Administration Bureau, and various types of 28 horizontal projects. In 2019, the hospital won two awards in Science and Technology Progress in Hebei Province in 1st place, three awards in 2nd place, 0ne in 3rd place. In addition, the hospital won 55 medical science and technological progress awards of Hebei Province in year 2018 awarded in 2019. In 2018, 142 published papers were indexed by the SCI (E) with our institute as an independent completion unit. Two papers were published in journals with an Impact factor of 5.0 or above and 15 papers were published in journals within JCR zone 1 area. Twenty SCI (E) papers (corresponding authors are in the Second Hospital of HBMU) were published including 1 paper was published in a journal with an impact factor above 5.0 and 3 papers were published in journals within JCR zone 1. In2018, the China Hospital Science and Technology Impact Ranking ranked 16 disciplines within the top 100, among them, Neurology was ranked top 14, Pediatrics was ranked top 23, Hematology was ranked top 43, and Cardiovascular disease was ranked top 52. The Second Hospital of HBMU is the Second Clinical Medical College of Hebei Medical University with 16 majors in the PhD degree programs and 34 majors in the Master's degree programs. The hospital has 6 provincial excellent medicine teaching courses. Currently, there are 1,198 graduate students, including 988 professional masters and 138 academic master’s students and 72 PhD students. The Second Hospital of HBMU takes tight control of basic quality as the foundation of the establishment of the hospital, has accomplished a full-process and full-member medical quality control management. The hospital has been actively making efforts on innovating the medical service model as proved by taking the leads in opening a one-stop appointment medical service center, oncology consultation center, and in-hospital consultation system in HeBei province. The hospital operates clinics for 365 days a year and receives patients 24 hours a day in the Emergency Department.
